Function and technical context

The tail anode is a cathodic protection component installed in the aft area of Mercury, Mariner and Mercruiser outboard motors and sterndrives. Its function is to absorb the galvanic corrosion generated by prolonged contact between dissimilar metals and salt water, preventing the corrosive attack from affecting critical engine parts such as blocks, cylinder heads and cooling systems. When to replace this part?

The tail anode should be inspected at the beginning of each sailing season and replaced when it shows visible wear, deep erosion, or has lost more than 50% of its mass. In salt waters with high mineral content or in areas with intense saline currents, replacement may be necessary every 1-2 seasons. Keeping the anode in good condition is an essential preventative measure that avoids costly corrosion repairs on engine components and ensures maximum protection throughout the entire sailing campaign.
