Function and technical context

The tail anode is a cathodic protection component installed on the stern of the outboard motor or the stern unit of the MerCruiser drive system. Its function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to protect metal engine components against galvanic corrosion in salt water environments. It acts as a defensive barrier that absorbs corrosive attacks, preventing rust and degradation from reaching the engine body, propeller and aluminum accessories. Without this active protection, seawater salinity would corrode metals in the stern system, compromising structural integrity and reducing engine life.

When to replace this part?

The tail anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season, especially after heavy saltwater use. When the anode shows visible wear greater than 50% of its thickness or presents cracks and detachments, it is time to replace it immediately. Preventive replacement at the end of the summer season prevents the engine from being left unprotected during storage and on future outings, preventing costly corrosion repairs that can irreversibly damage the stern unit.
