Description

Function and technical context

The 41100276 plate anode is part of the cathodic protection system of the Volvo Penta drive train, acting as a sacrificial element in the bow thruster area. Its function is to oxidize preferentially compared to the structural metals of the propellant, diverting towards itself the galvanic corrosion processes generated by the potential difference between dissimilar materials submerged in salt or brackish water. The flat plate geometry allows its direct fixation in the bow area, guaranteeing localized electrochemical coverage in an area especially exposed to corrosive attack. Without effective anodic protection, the propeller and adjacent metal components of the propeller are left unprotected from galvanic corrosion, which can lead to pitting, material loss and, in severe cases, structural failure of the drive train.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the beginning and end of each sailing season: when wear exceeds 50% of the anode volume, it is essential to immediately replace them to maintain active cathodic protection. An anode that is completely consumed or has a hardened surface and a whitish crust has lost its sacrificial capacity, an unequivocal sign that the metal components of the propellant are being exposed to corrosion. Replacing the anode preventively at each annual grounding is the practice recommended by professionals in the sector, since the cost of this replacement is minimal compared to the repair or replacement of a propeller or shaft damaged by galvanic corrosion.
