Description

Function and technical context

The tail anode acts as a cathodic protection element in the aft area of the thruster, interposing a sacrificial metal between the salt or brackish water and the critical metal components of the transmission system. It works directly on the submerged propulsion assembly, protecting aluminum and stainless steel alloys against galvanic corrosion generated by the difference in electrical potential between different metals in contact with the marine electrolyte. Without effective cathodic protection, degradation silently advances over the tailshaft, propeller, grease caps and transmission housing, compromising the structural integrity of the entire powertrain. Mounted directly on the tail of the motor, this anode maintains the uniform protection potential throughout the submerged structure, avoiding high-cost repairs caused by electro-erosion.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode must be replaced is the loss of between 50% and 70% of its mass: when the anode is observed to be very reduced, pitted or completely consumed, the cathodic protection is no longer effective and the metal components of the drive unit are exposed to active corrosion. The inspection and replacement must be carried out at least once per nautical season, or sooner if the boat operates in high salinity waters or with high galvanic currents at the mooring. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage to the tail and transmission of the marine engine.
