Function and Technical Specifications
The STD 5006751 piston kit (part no. REC5006751) is designed for Johnson and Evinrude 3-cylinder two-stroke outboard engines with a standard bore of 3.000 inches. The piston is the central component of the combustion system: it transmits the force generated by the ignition of the air-fuel mixture directly to the connecting rod, converting linear motion into crankshaft rotation. A worn or damaged piston compromises the combustion chamber’s seal, causing loss of compression, excessive fuel consumption, starting failures, and a drastic reduction in power delivered to the shaft. This kit includes the piston along with the rings (compression and oil rings) necessary for a complete rebuild of the assembly, allowing factory compression ratios to be restored in 60, 65, 70, and 75 hp engines manufactured between 1976 and 1988.
When should this part be replaced?
The most common symptoms indicating wear on the piston or rings in a two-stroke outboard motor are: persistent blue smoke from the exhaust (burnt oil leaking past the rings), a noticeable loss of compression in one or more cylinders when tested with a compression gauge, difficulty starting when cold, and increased consumption of premixed oil. For engines of this type, it is recommended to check the condition of the pistons and rings at every seasonal service or when a drop in compression exceeding 10–15% of the nominal value is detected. Replacing the kit as a preventive measure upon detecting the first symptoms prevents progressive damage to the cylinder, crankshaft, and connecting rod—repairs that are considerably more expensive than replacing the kit itself.
