The cylinder head gasket is the sealing component that seals the joint between the engine block and the cylinder head, ensuring that combustion gases remain confined within the combustion chambers without escaping into the cooling or lubrication circuits. It operates simultaneously within the combustion system, the water cooling circuit, and the oil circuit, withstanding continuous cycles of pressure and temperature. If this gasket loses its sealing ability—due to aging, localized overheating, or improper cylinder head tightening—the engine may mix coolant with oil, lose compression in one or more cylinders, or expel gases through unintended areas. This part replaces parts 313413, 0313413 (OMC) and 802249, 878846 (Mercury/Mariner/MerCruiser), and is fully compatible with Johnson and Evinrude engines in the 60 to 75 hp ranges.
When should this part be replaced?
The most common symptoms of a faulty cylinder head gasket are: persistent white smoke from the exhaust (indicating water in the combustion chamber), a milky emulsion in the engine oil, loss of compression detected during a cylinder test, or recurring overheating with no apparent cause in the cooling system. It is recommended to inspect and replace the cylinder head gasket whenever the cylinder head is removed for any service, or when the engine has experienced a severe overheating episode, as extreme thermal cycling irreversibly deforms and damages the sealing material. Replacing it as a preventive measure during a thorough overhaul prevents costly breakdowns—such as cylinder head warping or block erosion—that could leave the vessel inoperable on the open sea.
