Description

Function and technical context

The J-prop TEN01030 sacrificial anode is a cathodic protection component designed specifically for boat propellers and shafts. Its function is to act as a sacrificial metal, oxidizing in a controlled manner to protect the noblest metal parts of the propulsion assembly - such as the shaft, propeller or propeller hub - against galvanic corrosion produced by the action of salt, brackish or fresh water. By concentrating the electrochemical oxidation process on itself, it preserves the structural integrity and hydrodynamic performance of the propulsion system. Without an anode in good condition, the metal components of the propeller can suffer accelerated corrosion that compromises both the safety of the boat and the useful life of high-cost parts.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass or present an irregular, porous surface or with visible cracks; In no case should you wait until they are completely consumed. As a general rule, it is recommended to change it once a year in salt water or every two seasons in fresh water, although in areas with high salinity or in boats that remain in the water continuously the interval may be shorter. Replacing the J-prop anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of shafts and propellers, whose repair or replacement involves a much higher cost than this simple replacement.
