STERN ANODE 159x70
Description
Function and technical context
This stern anode acts as a cathodic protection element in the stern area of the outboard motor, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion from attacking the noble metal parts of the powertrain. It works directly in the antifouling and structural protection system of the boat, acting as a shield against corrosion caused by the difference in electrical potential between different metals submerged in salt or brackish water. Measuring 159x70 mm, this anode covers the exposed aft surface, protecting critical components such as the engine casing, drive shaft and water contact surfaces. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced in time, corrosion directly attacks the structural parts of the engine, potentially causing irreversible damage with high repair costs.
When to replace this part?
The anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, without waiting for them to be completely consumed. The most obvious symptoms that the anode has exhausted its useful life are the appearance of pitting or visible corrosion on the stern housing, redness or superficial degradation of adjacent metal parts, and the presence of irregular rust deposits in the immersion zone. As a preventive rule, nautical maintenance professionals recommend renewing the stern anodes at least once a year in salt water, or sooner if the boat is permanently anchored, since a depleted anode leaves the metal structure of the engine unprotected with each trip to sea.
