Description

Function and technical context

The fish-shaped sacrificial anodes act as cathodic protection of the hull, acting as a consumable element that attracts electrolytic corrosion before it affects the structural metals of the boat: propellers, shafts, rudders, keels and any submerged metal accessories. The zinc or aluminum of the anode preferentially oxidizes compared to the nobler metals of the hull, interrupting the galvanization process that silently destroys metal parts in contact with salt or brackish water. This type of hull anode is fixed directly to the outer surface of the vessel by bolting or welding, distributing the electrolytic protection throughout the hull area. Without correct anodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly damage the hull and propulsion systems in a single sailing season.

When to replace this part?

The unmistakable sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 30% and 50% of its mass due to corrosion: from that point it no longer offers sufficient protection for the rest of the season. As a preventive maintenance rule, it is recommended to inspect the hull anodes at each beaching and replace them at the beginning of each nautical season or, at most, every two beachings, regardless of their apparent visual condition. Delaying changing the anode is one of the most costly mistakes in boat maintenance, as repairing a shaft or propeller damaged by galvanic corrosion far exceeds the cost of a preventive replacement.
