Description

Function and technical context

Hull anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of the metal surfaces of the hull, propellers, buttresses and other submerged components of the vessel. This aluminum anode with dimensions 219x108 mm acts as a sacrificial electrode, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the noble metals of the hull such as steel, bronze or structural aluminum. Its aluminum alloy composition makes it especially suitable for salt and brackish water environments, where the difference in electrochemical potential between different metals generates parasitic currents that cause accelerated and destructive corrosion. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can compromise the structural integrity of the hull and its submerged fittings in a matter of a single sailing season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the hull anode needs to be replaced is a mass loss of more than 50% of the anode volume: when less than half of the aluminum material remains, it has ceased to offer sufficient protection. Visually, a completely eroded, fragmented or uniform grayish-white anode indicates that it has been consumed and that the hull is already exposed to galvanic corrosion. It is recommended to inspect and replace the hull anodes at least once per nautical season, coinciding with the annual beaching; In areas of high electrical conductivity in the water or with vessels exposed to eddy currents from ports, a semiannual review is advisable. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical measure to avoid severe damage to the hull and metal appendages, the repair of which can involve a much higher cost.
