Description

Function and technical context

Hull anodes are cathodic protection elements that act as an electrochemical sacrifice to preserve the submerged metal surfaces of the vessel against galvanic corrosion. This aluminum anode, with dimensions 159x70 mm, is installed directly on the hull of the boat, where it attracts eddy currents and the corrosive action of salt, brackish or fresh water, protecting itself instead of the more valuable structural metals such as the propeller, shaft, propeller or stern fittings. The choice of aluminum as a material makes it especially suitable for salt and brackish water environments, offering effective protection and a balanced lifespan compared to zinc or magnesium anodes. If this component is not renewed in time and is completely consumed, the hull and adjacent metal elements are exposed to electrolytic corrosion, which can cause serious deterioration, metal pitting and costly shipyard repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the hull anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 70% of its visible mass, appearing irregular, badly eroded or with deep cracks. It is recommended to inspect and replace the hull anodes at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching of the boat; In areas with high electrolyte activity or very conductive waters, an intermediate review may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid electrolytic damage to the hull and submerged metal accessories, the repair of which can multiply the cost of a simple replacement several times.
