Description

Function and technical context

Aluminum anodes constitute the central element of the cathodic protection system in marine engines and Bukh propulsion units, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice to preserve the submerged metal parts of the engine against galvanic corrosion. This component works directly in contact with water—whether salty, brackish or fresh with high conductivity—protecting exhaust manifolds, water pump housings, axles and other structural elements of the powertrain. When the anode completely degrades without being replaced, galvanic corrosion attacks the base components of the engine, causing severe and irreversible damage to high-cost parts. Aluminum as an anode material offers an excellent relationship between protection capacity and durability, being especially recommended for salty and brackish waters.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is a visible mass loss of more than 50% of the anode volume, or the appearance of active corrosion (pitting, reddish or greenish oxidation) on adjacent metal parts of the engine or drive unit, indicating that the anode no longer offers sufficient protection. As a general maintenance rule, the anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced whenever they show wear equal to or greater than half their size, regardless of the time elapsed, since the aggressiveness of the marine environment varies considerably. Preventatively replacing the anode at each annual grounding is the most cost-effective practice to avoid costly repairs to critical components of the Bukh engine.
