SPARE ZINC 92 x 19mm.
Description
Function and technical context
This replacement zinc anode is part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice to prevent galvanic corrosion on the submerged metal parts of the outboard motor or propulsion equipment. Being a more active metal than steel, aluminum or bronze, zinc preferably oxidizes, preserving propellers, shafts, casings and other critical parts of the propulsion assembly. With dimensions of 92 x 19 mm, this anode is designed to directly replace the factory zinc in the corresponding position, maintaining the protective coverage without modifying the hydrodynamic behavior of the engine. If the anode is depleted without being replaced in time, the structural metal elements of the engine or transmission are exposed to electrolysis, which can cause severe and irreversible damage to high-cost components.
When to replace this part?
Zinc anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season; The general rule among naval mechanics is to replace them when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, without waiting for them to be completely consumed. Symptoms of a depleted anode include the appearance of pitting, erosion or a whitish and rough discoloration on the adjacent metal surfaces of the engine, an unequivocal sign that galvanic corrosion is already acting. Preventatively replacing zinc at each seasonal inspection is the most economical measure to avoid major repairs to the propeller shaft, foot housing or mounting brackets.
