Description

Function and technical context

Zinc anodes are essential sacrificial elements in the cathodic protection of boats and outboard or inboard engines exposed to salt or brackish water. This 51 x 6 mm replacement zinc acts as a sacrificial electrode: being a less noble metal than the aluminum or stainless steel of the engine and hull components, it preferentially corrodes, preserving critical metal parts from electrolysis and galvanic corrosion. Its correct installation on shafts, propellers, keels or engine supports guarantees that electrochemical corrosion is concentrated in the anode and not in structural components that are more expensive and difficult to replace.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that a zinc anode has exhausted its useful life is a reduction in mass by more than 50%, at which point it loses protective effectiveness and must be replaced immediately. It is recommended that zinc anodes be inspected at least once a season – ideally at each grounding or bottom check – and replaced preventively at the beginning of each sailing season if they show visible wear, cracks or loss of adhesion. Replacing the anode in time is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to shafts, propellers and drivetrain components that can lead to high-cost repairs or immobilization of the boat.
