Function and technical context

The 51 x 13mm Replacement Zinc is a sacrificial anode designed to protect submerged metal parts of your boat from galvanic corrosion, one of the most destructive processes in marine environments. It acts as a sacrificial electrode in the cathodic protection system: being a more reactive metal than the steel or aluminum of the structural and engine components, it corrodes preferably before the most expensive parts of the boat do so. This type of anode is usually installed on tail shafts, rudders, propellers, stern arms and metal hulls, ensuring the integrity of the submerged metal assembly throughout the navigation season. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can silently degrade shafts, propellers and hull surfaces, leading to serious breakdowns and high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a very irregular surface, or have been completely consumed. Completely worn or missing zinc leaves submerged metal components completely exposed to galvanic corrosion, which can lead to tailshaft pitting, propeller deterioration, or hull damage within weeks. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season, especially in ports with high water conductivity or facilities with eddy currents, is the practice recommended by any professional shipyard to avoid disproportionate repairs.
