Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are essential cathodic protection elements in outboard engines and marine propellers: as they are made of a less noble metal alloy than the aluminum or steel of the engine block, they attract galvanic and electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise attack structural components of the engine. This 51 x 19 mm anode is installed directly on the engine block or casing, acting as a sacrificial shield against corrosion caused by salt, brackish or high mineral content water. If the anode is completely depleted without being replaced, galvanic corrosion advances to critical parts such as the engine casing, axle or tail, generating structural damage that requires costly repair and compromising the integrity of the propulsion assembly.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the anode must be changed is when its mass has been reduced by approximately 50%, presenting an irregular, porous surface or with visible loss of material; at that point it has ceased to offer effective protection. It is recommended to inspect the sacrificial anodes at least once a season - ideally at each beaching or annual tune-up - and replace them preventively when wear exceeds half their volume, without waiting for them to disappear completely. Replacing the anode at the right time is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid deep corrosion in the engine that requires expensive repairs in the workshop or, in the worst case, at sea.
