Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the protective shield for the metal components of the outboard or inboard motor against galvanic corrosion, one of the most destructive silent enemies in marine environments. This engine anode with 1" x 1/2" thread acts as a galvanically active element: being a less noble metal, it corrodes in a controlled manner instead of attacking the structural parts of the engine such as the block, crankcase or cooling ducts. Its installation in the engine guarantees that the electrochemical corrosion caused by immersion in salt, brackish or even fresh water is concentrated on the anode and not on critical and unrecoverable surfaces. Without adequate cathodic protection, internal and external engine components are exposed to pitting, material loss and structural failures that are difficult and expensive to repair.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious alarm signal is the visible reduction in the volume of the anode: when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is compromised. In practice, engine anodes should be inspected at least once a season and renewed preventively at the beginning of each nautical season, especially in salt water areas or areas with high electrical conductivity. Don't wait for the anode to disappear completely; Replacing it in time is the most economical measure to avoid severe corrosion in the engine block or exhaust manifolds.
