Description

Function and technical context

The Racor RK21069 water sensor is part of the marine diesel fuel filtration system, integrating directly into the Racor separator filter housing to continuously monitor the accumulation of condensed water inside the filter cartridge. Its mission is to detect the exact moment when the level of retained water reaches the critical threshold, then activating an alarm signal on the boat's instrument panel. This early detection is essential because water in the fuel circuit is one of the main agents of deterioration of high-pressure injectors and injection pumps, components of high cost and difficult to replace on board. Without active monitoring, water can go unnoticed until it causes internal corrosion, cavitation in the injection pump or atomization failures in the injectors, compromising the starting and power of the marine diesel engine.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a defective water sensor in Racor filters are the failure to activate the alarm despite observing visible water in the filter bowl during purging, or continuous false alarms that occur even with the filter recently emptied and the fuel clean. It is recommended to verify the state and response of the sensor during each seasonal maintenance, especially before prolonged navigation or after periods of engine inactivity, since condensation is accelerated by the thermal changes typical of the marine environment. Replacing the sensor preventively if there is any doubt about its operation prevents not detecting real water contamination, which could lead to serious breakdowns of the injection train while in full navigation.
