VM ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are the backbone of any cathodic protection system on outboard engines, inboard engines and auxiliary thrusters: being a more electrochemically active metal than aluminum or stainless steel structural parts, they deliberately corrode rather than allowing critical engine parts to do so. This VM anode with reference TEN02060 acts within the protection system against galvanic corrosion, which especially affects propulsion unit casings, shafts, propellers and blocks in contact with salt or brackish water. Without adequate protection, electrolytic corrosion can irreversibly degrade high-cost components such as the lower transmission case or the propeller support, generating structural failures that are difficult and expensive to repair.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that an anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is compromised. The general recommendation in professional environments is to inspect and replace the anodes at least once per nautical season, or more frequently if the vessel operates in waters with high conductivity or in ports with dispersed electrical currents. Changing the anode preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid damage due to galvanic corrosion to components of the transmission and engine tailstock.
