RUGGERINI ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are the mainstay of cathodic protection in marine engines and propulsion units: being more electrochemically active than the metals they protect, they preferentially corrode, preserving vital components such as the engine block, propeller, shaft or casing of the propulsion unit. This specific anode for Ruggerini is installed directly on metal surfaces exposed to water, whether fresh, brackish or marine, acting as a continuous galvanic barrier. Without an anode in good condition, galvanic corrosion advances silently on high-cost structural parts, potentially compromising the integrity of the engine and the boat.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode has completed its life cycle is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the zinc, aluminum or magnesium material has been largely consumed, the cathodic protection ceases and corrosion begins to attack the noble metals of the engine. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season and, as a general rule, replace them preventively at each annual tune-up, regardless of their visual condition, especially in areas with high electrical conductivity of the water. Changing the anode in time is the most economical measure to avoid serious breakdowns in components that are difficult to access or have high replacement costs.
