GM COOLING ANODE W/PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
This cooling anode with cap is designed to protect the engine's internal cooling circuit against galvanic corrosion, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice in the contact areas with fresh or salt water within the engine block. It works directly in the water cooling system, inserting itself into specific holes in the block where electrolytic corrosion can degrade the engine's base metal. Its function is to absorb the corrosive attack instead of the structural components of the propellant, preserving the integrity of galleries, ducts and block walls. If this anode runs out without being replaced, the metal of the engine itself is exposed to corrosion, which can lead to pitting in the block, obstruction of cooling ducts and, in advanced cases, perforations or structural failures that are difficult to repair. The integrated plug allows for easy installation and replacement without the need to completely empty the cooling circuit.
When to replace this part?
The cooling anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, without waiting for them to be completely consumed, since an exhausted anode leaves the engine block unprotected against electrolysis. Signs that the anode is at its limit include a visible reduction in its volume, intense whitish or grayish coloration, and a friable or crumbly texture to the touch. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season, or every 200-300 hours of navigation in waters with high electrical conductivity, is the recommended practice to avoid internal damage to the block that can involve very high-cost repairs.
