AIFO COOLING ANODE PLUG

Function and technical context

The Aifo engine cooling anode cap is a cathodic protection element integrated directly into the engine cooling circuit. Its function is to act as a galvanic sacrifice, attracting electrochemical corrosion to its own material - usually zinc or magnesium alloy - in order to protect the internal components of the engine block, such as the water passages, the jacket and the heat exchanger, against the corrosive attack of salt or brackish water. Being housed in the cooling circuit itself, it works in permanent contact with the cooling fluid and is exposed to the same corrosive agents that circulate inside the engine. If this anode plug is completely consumed or is not replaced in time, corrosion advances towards structural metal parts of the engine, which can cause pitting, blockages in the water passages and, in severe cases, cracks in the block or cylinder head due to localized overheating.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the cooling anode plug is exhausted is the presence of corrosion or visible pitting on metal surfaces of the cooling circuit, as well as the appearance of reddish rust residues or whitish deposits in the coolant liquid when changing. In marine engines that operate in salt water, it is recommended to inspect and replace the cooling anodes at least once a season or every 200-300 hours of navigation, without waiting for total consumption. Replacing this anode plug preventively, before more than 50% of its mass is consumed, is the practice recommended by naval technicians to avoid irreversible damage to the interior of the block that leads to high-cost repairs.
