AIFO COOLING ANODE PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The Aifo engine cooling anode plug is a cathodic protection element integrated directly into the engine's water cooling circuit. Its function is to act as a sacrificial anode within the cooling galleries and ducts, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the internal metal surfaces of the block, cylinder head and heat exchanger. When installed at strategic points in the water circuit, it protects expensive components such as cylinder liners, cylinder head plugs and cooled exhaust manifolds. If this plug wears out completely without being replaced in time, corrosion advances to the structural parts of the engine, potentially causing internal coolant leaks, overheating and irreversible damage to the block.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms that the cooling anode is exhausted are the appearance of visible rust or corrosion deposits in the water circuit, coolant leaks from points in the block or cylinder head, and in advanced cases, recurrent engine overheating. It is recommended to inspect and replace this type of anodes at the beginning of each nautical season or every 200-300 hours of operation, following the Aifo manufacturer's guidelines. Replacing it preventively is the most economical measure to avoid major repairs to the block or cylinder head, especially on boats that operate in salt or brackish waters where the corrosive aggressiveness is noticeably greater.
