Description

Function and technical context

The plugged sacrificial anode for Ford marine engines is an essential component of your boat's cathodic protection system. Its function is to rust in a controlled manner instead of the metal parts of the engine (casings, shafts, propellers and aluminum or steel blocks), thus avoiding the galvanic corrosion that salt or brackish water aggressively causes on structural metals. By incorporating a plug, this anode is installed directly in the holes or drainage points enabled in the Ford marine engine block, ensuring direct electrical contact and effective coverage of the area most exposed to the electrolyte. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can compromise the integrity of the engine block, water-cooled exhaust manifolds and internal cooling passages, with consequences ranging from microcracks to complete engine failure.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost between 40% and 50% of their mass, since below that level their protective capacity drops drastically. The symptoms of a depleted anode manifest themselves indirectly: appearance of reddish or whitish corrosion on aluminum surfaces of the engine, pitting in the block or exhaust manifold, and in advanced cases, leaks in gaskets and cooling ducts due to deterioration of the base metal. It is recommended to replace the TEN02071T anode preventively at each annual grounding or every 200-300 hours of navigation - especially in areas of high salinity or ports with high galvanic currents - since the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to repairing a corroded engine block.
