CATERPILLAR ANODE SERIES 2288
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes act as an electrochemical shield in marine engines, protecting them against galvanic corrosion that occurs when metals of different potential are submerged in salt, brackish or fresh water. This anode for the Caterpillar 2288 series is installed at strategic points on the engine block or transmission, preferably corroding to preserve higher value metal components such as the block, casing or axle. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion advances silently and can irreversibly deteriorate high-cost parts, compromising the structural integrity and tightness of the drive assembly.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is a reduction in its mass by more than 50%, which indicates that it no longer offers sufficient protection; In advanced cases, pits or rust stains can be seen on the adjacent metal surfaces that were intended to be protected. For Caterpillar engines for marine use, it is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season and replace them before their wear exceeds this threshold, regardless of the accumulated navigation hours. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most cost-effective practice: the cost of an anode is minimal compared to repairing a block or transmission affected by galvanic corrosion.
