Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes like this component for Baudouin engines are part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as an electrochemical shield against galvanic corrosion that affects metal parts submerged or in contact with salt or brackish water. The operating principle is based on the electrochemical potential difference: the anode material—more reactive—preferentially oxidizes, thus protecting the noble metals of the engine such as aluminum, bronze or stainless steel. Without adequate anodic protection, galvanic corrosion advances silently and progressively, affecting casings, shafts, propellers and other structural components of the Baudouin propulsion group, with consequences that can lead to serious breakdowns and costly repairs at the dock.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass due to oxidation: at this point it no longer offers sufficient protection and the engine metals are exposed to galvanic corrosion. As a general rule of preventive maintenance, sacrificial anodes should be inspected at each annual launch or docking and replaced at the beginning of each sailing season, or sooner if the vessel regularly operates in waters with high electrical conductivity. Replacing the Baudouin anode (ref. TEN02300) preventively is the lowest cost intervention available to avoid structural damage to the engine that can render the boat unusable while sailing.
