Description

Function and technical context

The Racor RAC230R2 filter works within the fuel supply system of marine diesel engines, placing itself between the tank and the injection pump to retain solid particles, sediments and emulsified water that inevitably accumulate in boat diesel. With a maximum flow rate of 114 liters per hour, it guarantees a continuous and purified supply without restriction of the flow necessary for the engine. Its function is critical because the injectors and high-pressure pumps of marine diesel engines tolerate contaminants of just a few microns: an unretained abrasive particle can scratch the pump plates or collapse an injector, generating progressive power losses and costly breakdowns. The compact dimensions of this filter – 229 mm high by 102 mm wide and deep – make it easy to integrate into the typically narrow engine compartments of sailboats and motor boats.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn out or clogged diesel fuel filter are costly cold starts, drops in speed at full load, excessive black or white smoke from the exhaust, and intermittent engine shutdowns due to fuel starvation. In marine installations, it is recommended to replace the filter element every 100-200 hours of operation or at the beginning of each nautical season, since diesel fuel stored in boat tanks tends to develop microorganisms and sediments more quickly than in land vehicles. Changing the filter preventively before a long voyage is the most economical measure to avoid engine stoppage at sea.
