Function and technical context

The CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) coil is part of the electronic ignition system of the outboard engine, being responsible for storing and discharging the electrical energy necessary to generate the spark in the spark plugs at the precise moment. It works in close coordination with the CDI module, the ignition pickup and the stator, regulating the high voltage pulses that determine the correct firing of the ignition in each engine cycle. A failure in this coil can cause loss of power, irregular starts, misfires in one or more cylinders or the complete inability to start the engine, making it a critical component for the reliable operation of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged CDI coil include intermittent jerks or cuts at different revolutions, difficulty starting hot or cold, misfiring in one or more cylinders and, in severe cases, sudden engine stoppage without apparent cause. As it is an electronic component subjected to continuous vibrations, humidity and heat, it is recommended to check it during each seasonal maintenance and replace it if there are any symptoms of ignition failure, since a late diagnosis can lead to damage to the CDI module or other system components. Replacing it preventively at the first signs is the best way to avoid a navigation breakdown.
