Function and technical context
The spark plug acts as the final element of the ignition system in marine petrol engines, generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in each combustion cycle. Its nickel electrode is designed to resist the progressive erosion caused by high temperatures and accelerated corrosion imposed by the marine environment, both in saltwater navigation and in high humidity environments. A bad spark plug causes partial or total ignition failures, which results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption, irregular engine vibrations and, in severe cases, inability to start. Maintaining the electrode distance within factory tolerances is essential for complete combustion and the engine to operate with the efficiency and reliability required by nautical use.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn spark plug in a marine engine include difficult or failed cold starts, jerking and backfiring under load, noticeably higher fuel consumption than usual, and visible soot deposits on the electrode when removed for inspection. In petrol marine engines, it is recommended to check the spark plugs during each seasonal maintenance and replace them preventively according to the interval indicated by the engine manufacturer, usually between 100 and 300 hours of navigation depending on the conditions of use. Changing the spark plugs preventively before starting the season prevents unexpected breakdowns while sailing and ensures that the engine responds reliably on each outing.
