Description

Function and Technical Context

The black box is the electronic control module of the ignition system in Johnson and Evinrude outboard engines from the nineteen seventies, acting as the brain that regulates ignition advance and ensures proper spark in each combustion cycle. It works in close coordination with the stator, the magnetic trigger and the ignition coils, forming part of the CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) system that replaced the mechanical points in these powerplants. Its correct operation is critical to maintain ignition timing: a defective module causes intermittent spark failures, severe power loss, difficulty starting in cold conditions and, in extreme cases, complete engine shutdown during navigation. This component is especially critical in 85, 115 and 135 HP engines from the 1973-1977 generation, where the 6 and 12 ampere electrical system depends directly on the module's integrity to operate within safe parameters.

When to Replace This Part?

The most common symptoms of a faulty CDI module include irregular or impossible starting, sudden engine shutdown at high RPM, erratic operation in one or several cylinders and complete absence of spark in any of the cylinders when checked with a stroboscopic timing light. Unlike mechanical wear components, the black box has no fixed replacement interval in hours, but it should be electrically inspected at each seasonal maintenance and whenever symptoms of poor ignition appear that are not resolved by replacing coils or spark plugs. Replacing it preventively at the first sign of failure avoids being stranded at sea and rules out the module before undertaking more costly diagnostics in the ignition system.
