Description

Function and technical context

This male union with rubber barb acts as a connection element between a threaded pipe and a section of flexible hose within the hydraulic circuits of a vessel, usually in seawater cooling systems, fuel circuits, bilge or ventilation. Made entirely of AISI 316 stainless steel, it offers resistance to marine corrosion much higher than that of carbon steel or conventional brass, being especially suitable for installations in permanent contact with salt water or high humidity environments. The 1/2" threaded end allows for secure attachment to manifolds, valve bodies or engine blocks machined with standard threads, while the 15mm barb ensures a firm hold of the hose via clamp, preventing leaks that could compromise the integrity of the system. A failure in this type of fitting, whether due to corrosion, cracking or loosening, can result in loss of flow, unwanted water entry into sealed compartments or interruption of coolant flow, with serious consequences for the engine or the safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a hose fitting or nipple must be replaced are: presence of surface rust or pitting on the body of the fitting (a sign that the steel has been compromised), visible leaks at the connection with the hose even though the clamp is correct, and difficulty in disassembling the hose due to deformation of the nipple. In saltwater installations, it is recommended to visually inspect these fittings at each seasonal maintenance, as galvanic corrosion can progress silently. Preventively replacing any fittings with signs of deterioration before launching the boat avoids breakdowns at sea and the risk associated with a loss of cooling or a fuel spill far from port.
