Function and technical context

White gel coat is the surface finishing layer that protects and colors the fiberglass laminate on boat hulls, decks and structures. It acts as a primary barrier against water absorption, ultraviolet radiation and chemical agents present in the marine environment. Its correct application is essential to maintain the structural integrity of the underlying laminate, since a deteriorated surface can lead to osmosis, delaminations and progressive loss of hull watertightness. It is used both in repairs of dents, scratches and bubbles as well as in restoration and maintenance work on the cover and dead work.

When to apply or renew the gel coat?

The most common symptoms that indicate the need to intervene with gel coat are the appearance of microcracks on the surface of the helmet (known as "spider cracks"), areas with loss of shine or yellowing due to UV degradation, osmosis bubbles and chips caused by impacts. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the gel coat at each annual laying and make specific repairs before moisture penetrates the laminate, as damage spreads quickly once the finish coat is compromised. Acting preventively during each seasonal maintenance avoids costly structural hull repairs.
