Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the galvanic shield of any underwater propeller or propulsion system, and the TENAUTOH6 Autoprop Anode fulfills exactly that function on Autoprop variable pitch propellers. Made of high-purity zinc alloy, it acts as an active electrode that corrodes preferentially against the aluminum, bronze or stainless steel of the propeller components, interrupting the electrolytic corrosion process before it attacks the structural metal. Autoprop propellers are continuously exposed to galvanic currents in the water, especially in ports with high electrical activity or when navigating through salt and brackish waters, so having correctly sized cathodic protection is essential to preserve the mechanical integrity of the propulsion assembly.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the TENAUTOH6 anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is insufficient and corrosion begins to progress on the metal components of the Autoprop propeller. The recommended maintenance interval for propeller anodes is at least once a season, although in areas with very salty water or marine areas with a high density of boats connected to dock current, a semi-annual review may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning or end of each season is the most effective and economical measure to avoid irreparable damage to the propeller blades and hub.
