ANODO BUKH C/TAPON
Description
Function and technical context
The BUKH Plugged Engine Sacrificial Anode is an essential component of a vessel's cathodic protection system, designed to prevent galvanic corrosion on submerged metal parts of the engine and hull. It acts as the negative electrode of the galvanic cell that is formed when different metals come into contact with salt or brackish water, sacrificing itself to preserve more expensive components such as the engine block, propeller, shaft or heat exchanger. The integrated plug greatly facilitates installation and replacement, allowing a tight seal that prevents water from entering the threaded motor housing. If this anode is completely used up or is not present, the noble metals of the powertrain are left unprotected and suffer accelerated corrosion that can cause serious and costly breakdowns.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes should be visually inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost between 30 and 50% of their mass, since below that threshold their protective capacity decreases drastically. Symptoms of a depleted or missing anode include visible pitting or corrosion on metal engine parts such as the exhaust manifold, cylinder head cover or block, as well as a dark or gritty discoloration of the cooling water that may indicate active galvanic attack. It is recommended to replace this anode preventively at each seasonal inspection, especially in anchorage areas with high electrical conductivity or in ports with eddy currents, to guarantee continuous protection of the BUKH motor without interruptions.
