Description

Function and technical context

The aluminum anode for Ø98 mm Hamilton Jet thrusters acts as a cathodic protection element, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the metal parts of the water jet propulsion system against galvanic corrosion. It works directly on the jet drive assembly, where the structural metals – impellers, housings and shafts – are continually exposed to salt or brackish water, a highly corrosive environment. Its presence prevents galvanic action from damaging more expensive and complex components, such as the rotor or nozzle of the Hamilton propeller, the repair or replacement of which involves an expensive technical intervention. The diameter of Ø98 mm and the aluminum alloy make it especially suitable for the Hamilton Jet thruster models for which it is intended, guaranteeing a sufficient active surface for effective protection throughout the sailing season.

When to replace this part?

The anodes must be visually inspected at the end of each season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold their cathodic protection capacity drops significantly. In boats that usually navigate in salty or mineral-rich waters, the consumption rate is higher and may require inspection mid-season. Replacing the anode preventively at each annual maintenance is the most economical measure to avoid serious damage due to galvanic corrosion in the Hamilton Jet thruster, the repair of which involves much higher costs and grounding times.
