Description

Function and technical context

The KGF25 aluminum propeller anode with Ø38 mm coupling diameter acts as a galvanic sacrifice in the boat's cathodic protection system, absorbing electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise attack the noble metals of the propulsion assembly. Made of high-purity aluminum alloy, this anode is designed to be mounted directly on the propeller shaft of Vetus propulsion systems, protecting it along with the propeller, stern tube and other submerged metal components. Without active galvanic protection, electrolytic corrosion can irreversibly damage the shaft, propeller and gearbox, generating high-cost structural failures. The reference REC9449AL identifies this component as suitable for Vetus propulsion systems with a Ø38 mm shaft, aluminum being the recommended material for salty and brackish waters due to its balance between dissolution rate and protection capacity.

When to replace this part?

The main symptom of a depleted anode is a visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately to ensure continued protection of the shaft and propeller. In boats that are used frequently or that remain in the water throughout the season, it is recommended to inspect the anode every time the boat goes to the dock and perform a preventive replacement at the beginning of each nautical season. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance intervention that exists in naval propulsion: a non-renewed anode can lead to the total loss of a shaft or a propeller, repairs that multiply the cost of this component hundreds of times.
