Function and technical context

The RIVA Ø155 propeller anode in aluminum alloy acts as sacrificial cathodic protection, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the propeller, shaft and metal components of the submerged transmission. It works in the anti-corrosion protection system of the propulsion line, fixing directly on the hub or central area of ​​the propeller to create an electrochemical barrier against salt, brackish or contaminated water. Its role is critical because, without active anodic protection, the noble metals of the propeller and shaft suffer pitting and progressive erosion that compromise propulsive performance and can render high-cost components unusable. The aluminum material makes it especially suitable for salt and brackish waters, where it offers a controlled and effective dissolution rate throughout the boating season. The diameter of Ø155 mm determines its precise fit on propellers from the corresponding RIVA range, guaranteeing continuous and uniform electrical contact.

When to replace this part?

Propeller anodes must be inspected at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, show cracks, fragmentation or signs of detachment, since at that point their protective capacity is compromised. A clear sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the appearance of pits or whitish spots on the surface of the propeller or shaft, indicating that galvanic corrosion is already acting on the noble components. As a preventive rule, nautical maintenance professionals recommend systematically replacing the anode at each annual beaching, regardless of its visual appearance, to ensure continuous protection and avoid costly repairs to propellers, horns or propulsion shafts.
