Description

Function and technical context

The Ferretti boat propeller anode with a propeller diameter of 155 mm acts as a cathodic protection element, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the propeller, shaft and other submerged metal components against galvanic corrosion. Made of aluminum alloy (AL), it is especially suitable for navigation in salty and brackish waters, where the electrolytic activity is more aggressive on the metals of the transmission. Its correct installation in the propeller hub guarantees that the galvanic current is discharged on the anode and not on the structural parts of the propulsion. Without this component in good condition, the propeller and shaft can suffer pitting, erosion and metal loss that compromises the propulsion performance and safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

Aluminum anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have an irregular surface with deep craters or have partially detached from the attachment point. Unlike other wear components, waiting for the anode to be completely consumed leaves the propeller and shaft unprotected for weeks, potentially causing irreversible damage due to corrosion that requires grounding and replacement of high-cost parts. The professional recommendation is to change the propeller anode at each annual maintenance beaching, regardless of its outward appearance, to ensure complete cathodic protection throughout the entire boating season.
