Description

Function and technical context

This propeller anode made of aluminum is part of the cathodic protection system of boats equipped with Sleipner propellers, acting as a sacrificial electrode to protect the propeller and the metal elements of the shaft from galvanic corrosion caused by salt and brackish water. Being the most electronegative metal of the set, the anode is preferably consumed before the electrochemical attack reaches the structural parts of the propellant. Its correct installation guarantees the integrity of the propeller, shaft and the bronze or stainless steel components of the propulsion system, avoiding irreversible damage that can compromise the maneuverability of the boat and generate costly repairs in the dock.

When to replace this part?

It is recommended to inspect the anode at least once a season or every time the boat is taken to the dock: when wear exceeds 50% of its mass, it must be replaced immediately, since an exhausted anode leaves the noble metals of the propellant unprotected against galvanic corrosion. The symptoms of a consumed or missing anode are visible directly on the propeller: pitting, surface erosion or loss of material on the hub and blades. Replacing this component preventively at each seasonal maintenance is the most economical measure to avoid completely replacing the propeller or shaft.
