Function and technical context

This propeller anode for Sleipner engines acts as sacrificial galvanic protection, absorbing electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal components of the propulsion system. Made of zinc (ZN), it works directly on the shaft and propeller, areas especially exposed to salt water and galvanic currents generated by the potential difference between different metals in immersion. Without adequate cathodic protection, corrosion silently progresses on the propeller, shaft and propeller cone, compromising the structural integrity of the propulsion assembly and leading to high-cost repairs. The REC9417 reference has been designed to precisely adapt to Sleipner engines, guaranteeing correct electrical contact and sufficient sacrificial surface for a full season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has reached its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when the zinc has lost between 50% and 75% of its volume compared to the new state, it must be replaced immediately so as not to leave the propeller unprotected. In salty or brackish waters with high conductivity, wear can occur in a single boating season, so annual inspection and replacement—ideally at winter docking or before spring launching—is the practice recommended by industry professionals. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure available: the cost of a new zinc is minimal compared to repairing or replacing the propeller or shaft due to advanced corrosion.
