Description

Function and technical context

This aluminum anode for Sole engines works within the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a sacrificial mass to preserve the metal parts of the engine and hull against galvanic corrosion. Being a more electronegative metal than steel, bronze or structural aluminum of the propellant, the anode corrodes in a controlled manner instead of the vital components of the powertrain. Its 37 mm circular geometry makes it suitable for specific mounting on blocks and casings of Sole marine diesel engines, protecting them in both salt water and fresh or mixed water. Without active and well-maintained cathodic protection, electrolysis can cause accelerated degradation of castings, axles, propellers and exhaust manifolds, leading to serious and costly breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost between 50% and 60% of their mass, as below this threshold they no longer provide effective galvanic protection. The symptoms of a depleted anode are visible: very reduced surface area, irregular or practically non-existent shape, as well as the appearance of pits or oxidation stains on adjacent metal parts of the engine. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each nautical season, or after long periods of navigation in areas of high salinity, is the practice recommended by maintenance technicians to avoid irreparable damage to much higher cost components.
