Description

Function and technical context

The Ø 110 mm reinforced aluminum disc anode is a cathodic protection element designed to defend the submerged metal parts of a boat against galvanic corrosion. It acts as a sacrificial metal: being electrochemically more active than stainless steel, bronze or brass, it corrodes itself before the structural or mechanical components of the hull, tailshaft, propeller or propulsion system do so. Its disc geometry with reinforced construction guarantees a greater contact surface with the water and a robust fixation, which prolongs its useful life and ensures continuous protection even in demanding navigation conditions. The aluminum alloy composition makes it especially suitable for salty and brackish waters, where electrolytic corrosion is more aggressive.

When to replace this part?

A disc anode should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, as below that threshold it no longer provides effective cathodic protection. Symptoms of a depleted or missing anode are visible: pinpoint corrosion or pitting on the propeller, shaft or metal parts of the hull, greenish or reddish discoloration on bronze and brass surfaces, and in advanced cases, deep pitting that compromises the structural integrity of the components. It is recommended to replace the anode preventively at each annual stranding, without waiting for it to disappear completely, to avoid irreversible damage to high-cost parts such as axles, horns or propellers.
