Function and technical context

This ingot anode with zinc insert is part of the boat cathodic protection system, acting as a sacrificial electrode that preferentially corrodes to preserve the submerged metal surfaces of the hull, shaft, propeller and other structural components exposed to salt or brackish water. The interior metal insert allows a solid and secure fixation to the hull or the structure to be protected, guaranteeing effective electrical contact and a stable installation even under the vibrations of navigation. Without adequate cathodic protection, the noble metals of the underwater assembly – bronze, stainless steel, aluminum – are exposed to galvanic corrosion, which can lead to serious structural damage, loss of integrity of the propeller shaft or premature deterioration of the propeller and rudder. The zinc used in this anode offers an electrochemical potential ideal for salt and brackish water marine environments, being the reference alloy for the protection of steel and cast iron hulls.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least once a season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, present an irregular, heavily eroded surface, or deep pits and undercuts appear that drastically reduce their protective effectiveness. A sure sign that the anode is exhausted—or that it was never installed correctly—is the appearance of corrosion marks, pitting, or reddish-brown discoloration on the shaft, propeller, or metal keel. It is recommended that anodes be replaced preventatively at each annual grounding: the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to repairing a corroded shaft, a pitted propeller or hull damage caused by galvanic corrosion.
