Description

Function and technical context

The teardrop anode with bolt is a cathodic protection element designed to be mounted directly on the hull or submerged appendages of the boat using a fixing bolt, acting as a sacrificial metal that preferentially corrodes against the stainless steel, bronze and aluminum of the noble parts of the boat. Made of high-purity aluminum alloy, it is especially suitable for navigation in salty and brackish waters, where galvanic corrosion acts more aggressively on propellers, shafts, rudders and other submerged metal surfaces. Its teardrop-shaped geometry optimizes surface exposure to the electrolyte, maximizing protective effectiveness throughout the entire boating season. Without adequate cathodic protection, critical metal parts of the transmission and hull can suffer pitting, thinning and structural failures resulting in costly shipyard repairs.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced when they have lost between 30 and 50% of their mass, since below that threshold the protection capacity is seriously compromised. An unequivocal symptom of an exhausted or absent anode is the appearance of pitting or erosion on the propeller, shaft or rudder; If these signs are detected, replacement must be immediate to prevent galvanic damage from progressing to higher cost components. It is recommended to replace the anode preventively at each annual grounding: it is the lowest cost intervention that prevents the most expensive breakdowns of the propulsion system.
