ANODO LAGRIMA PERNO 3.1KG (ZN)
Description
Function and technical context
The bolt-on teardrop anode is a cathodic protection element designed to safeguard submerged metallic vessel components from galvanic corrosion, one of the most aggressive degradation processes in marine environments. Made of zinc (ZN), it acts as a sacrificial metal: being electrochemically less noble than stainless steel, aluminum or bronze in propellers, shafts and keels, it preferentially corrodes itself, preserving the structural integrity of said pieces. Its teardrop-shaped geometry with central bolt facilitates direct attachment to flat hull surfaces or transmission appendages, ensuring stable electrical contact and uniform exposure to water. Without active, well-maintained cathodic protection, submerged metal components can suffer pitting, wall thinning, and structural failure within months, especially in salty or high-ion water.
When to replace this part?
Zinc anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a very irregular surface, have fragmented or show an intense whitish color indicating depletion of active zinc. If the anode arrives at the beach completely consumed or practically non-existent, it is a sign that the adjacent metal components may have been left unprotected during part of the season, so it is advisable to check the propellers, shafts and cathodes of the hull for pitting. Preventive annual replacement, or even semi-annual in areas of high salinity or with high galvanic currents, is the practice recommended by professionals in the sector to avoid hull or transmission repairs at a much higher cost.
