Function and technical context

The teardrop-shaped sacrificial anode for welding acts as a cathodic protector of the submerged metal elements of the boat, attracting electrolytic corrosion to itself and preserving the hull, keel, tail shaft, rudder and other steel or aluminum structures intact. Made of high-purity zinc (Zn), this material is ideal for vessels that operate in salt or brackish water, where galvanic corrosion is especially aggressive. Its aerodynamic teardrop geometry facilitates direct welding on curved or inclined hull surfaces, guaranteeing permanent electrical contact and homogeneous distribution of cathodic protection. Without effective anodic protection, the noble metals of the hull and submerged appendages degrade rapidly, leading to pitting, structural thinning and, in severe cases, perforations that compromise the integrity of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold their cathodic protection capacity drops drastically. A sure sign that the anode is depleted—or that there was no working one—is pitting or visible corrosion on the hull, propeller, shaft, or rudder. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each sailing season, or after spending an extended period in port, is the practice recommended by dock technicians to avoid costly structural damage that is only detected at the next docking.
