Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are the primary cathodic protection system on vessels, and this oval zinc anode is specifically designed to be welded directly onto the hull, shafts, rudders or other submerged metal surfaces. Zinc acts as the most electronegative metal of the group, so that it corrodes preferentially and prevents the steel, aluminum or bronze of the naval structure from suffering from the galvanolysis caused by galvanic currents in the water. Without a properly adhered functional anode, corrosion advances silently and aggressively on critical structural parts of the boat, potentially compromising the integrity of the tailshaft, sternpost or the hull itself in a few seasons. Its fixation by welding guarantees permanent electrical contact without gaps, which maximizes the effectiveness of galvanic protection against screwed systems that can lose conductivity due to oxidation at the joint.
When to replace this part?
A zinc anode must be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, since below that threshold its protective capacity drops drastically and adjacent metal surfaces are exposed to electrolytic corrosion. The most obvious symptoms that cathodic protection has failed are the appearance of pitting or surface erosion on the propulsion shaft, rudders or submerged parts of the hull, as well as widespread reddish or whitish corrosion on bronze and aluminum hardware. It is recommended to visually inspect all anodes at each annual beaching and replace them preventively at the beginning of each navigation season; Acting before the anode is exhausted is always more economical than repairing a corroded shaft or damaged hull.
