Description

Function and technical context

This 207x110mm zinc plate anode acts as sacrificial cathodic protection for the hull, stern and submerged metal elements of the vessel, attracting electrolytic corrosion to itself and preserving the highest value structures. It works within the galvanic protection system, a passive but critical mechanism in any vessel operating in salt, brackish or even fresh water with high conductivity. Since zinc is a more electronegative metal than steel, aluminum or bronze, it preferentially oxidizes, sacrificing itself to protect propellers, shafts, aluminum hulls, exchangers and stern hardware. If this component is completely consumed without being replaced in time, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the structural metals of the boat, causing irreversible damage and very costly repairs in the dock.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the plate anode needs to be replaced is the loss of between 50% and 75% of its mass: when the zinc appears severely eroded, cracked or reduced to a thin sheet, it no longer offers sufficient protection. It is recommended to visually inspect the anodes at each beaching or at least once per nautical season—ideally during annual winter maintenance—and replace them preventively if they show wear of more than half, regardless of the time elapsed. Replacing the anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid degradation of aluminum shafts, propellers and structures, the repair costs of which far exceed the price of a zinc replacement.
