Function and technical context

This zinc plate anode acts as sacrificial cathodic protection, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the submerged metal components of the boat's hull, drive or accessories. Being made of zinc (Zn), it is especially suitable for use in salt water and brackish water, where electrolytic corrosion is more aggressive. The plate, with dimensions of 151x69 mm, is installed directly on flat surfaces of the hull or submerged structures, establishing a galvanic circuit that diverts corrosion towards the anode itself instead of towards the noble parts of the boat. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, propellers, shafts, trim anodes, exchangers and other metal parts are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can lead to serious structural failures and high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the plate anode needs replacement is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume compared to the new state, it must be replaced before it stops offering effective protection. The review and inspection of the zinc anodes should be carried out at least once a season—ideally at the annual docking—and more frequently if the boat remains in areas with high electrical conductivity of the water or marine areas with dispersed electrical current. Preventively replacing the plate anode at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of much higher value parts such as axles, propellers or metal hulls.
