Description

Function and technical context

The Riva aluminum plate anode (217x60 mm) is a cathodic protection element designed to be mounted on the hull, stern or exposed metal surfaces of the vessel, acting as a sacrificial metal against galvanic corrosion. Its function is to attract the electrochemical oxidation process towards itself, thus protecting the structural parts and the most expensive metal components - axles, propellers, guards, reversing anodes - from the destructive action of salt or brackish water. Aluminum as a base material makes it especially suitable for navigation in marine waters of medium-high salinity, offering effective protection and a controlled consumption rate. If this anode is depleted without being replaced in time, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the noble metals of the boat, potentially causing serious structural damage and costly repairs when grounded.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that a plate anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the aluminum block appears visibly reduced, cracked or fragmented after ground inspection, the protection is no longer reliable. It is recommended to check and replace the plate anodes at least once per nautical season, or every time the boat goes into dry dock for maintenance, regardless of its external appearance. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure possible compared to the cost of repairing a corroded shaft or a propeller damaged by uncontrolled galvanic corrosion.
